Staff Nurse – RMN

Hours: Full Time or Part Time (flexible hours)

Unit: 3 Beds (specialised step down)

Service: Consultant Psychiatrist Clinically Managed Unit

Overview: This is a position for an RMN to train and develop Mental Health Practices – circa 40% hands on – 60% mentoring and leading a team of care practitioners include training and liaising with a full clinical MDT.

OUR COMPANY:

We are a children’s residential care home provider based in Northampton. We offer an excellent therapeutic service for up to three children who are aged 10 to 18. We are currently seeking an RMN to join our team – someone who genuinely enjoy the rewards and challenges of working with children and young people.

THE ROLE:

As a RMN, you will be required to ensure the care plan is delivered and become the liaison to the Consultant Psychiatrist and the entire MDT.

Directing care and support to the children and young people living in the home. You will promote and participate in activities, encourage choice and new opportunities for the children and young people. The role will require you to actively participate in the running and administration/management of the home. You will need to communicate and liaise effectively with the manager, your co-workers, other professionals, and the young people. The role will also require you to create, manage and monitor care plans and medications records, in addition to developing the care team, sometimes to deputise in the absence of the manager.

Applicants may (on rare occasions) be required to work on a rota weekends basis and may occasionally be required to go on holiday with the children and young people.

All successful candidates must undergo an enhanced DBS clearance check before beginning work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Providing direct care and support of children and young people, using therapeutic principles and attachment-aware practice.
• Building relationships with the young people to encourage trust, while listening to and interpreting their needs and concerns.
• Ensure the correct administration of medication and monitor the results of treatment.
• Respond to distressed young people in a non-threatening manner and attempt to understand the source of their discomfort.
• Help the young people manage their emotions through de-escalating techniques.
• Excellent observational skills to assess and look out for signs of tension or anxiety.
• Provide evidence-based individual therapy, such as cognitive behaviour therapy for depression and anxiety.
• Organise social events aimed at developing the young people’s social skills and help reduce their feelings of isolation.
• Prepare and maintain the young people’s records and produce care plans and risk assessments.
• Promote and participate in activities for all children and young people.
• Helping manage and run the home.
• Offering advice, direct work and mentoring to individual children and young people, as well as staff members.
• Deputising in the absence of the manager.

THE CANDIDATE:

The candidate will have either professional experience working with children in some capacity or have appropriate qualifications along with an understanding of the developmental needs of children and young people in general, as well as experience of working in (or helping manage) a care home. You will want to work with children and young people using attachment-aware and trauma-informed approaches. You will possess excellent communication skills have a positive attitude and a compassionate, empathic and caring manner. Although not essential, a full driving licence would be highly advantageous. You will need to be flexible to work shifts and to sleep-in.

KEY EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL FOR THE ROLE:

• Professional experience working with children or qualifications in appropriate disciplines.
• NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse/RMN
• An understanding of the developmental needs of children and young people.
• Experience and/or desire to work using attachment-aware and trauma-informed approaches.
• Excellent communication, leadership and administrative skills with an approachable and friendly nature. Ideally have completed a recognised mentorship qualification, and committed to developing the skills and knowledge of those around you.
• Ability to work shifts (rare however on occasions this may be required)
• At least two years’ experience in a supervisory (shift leader/ team manager)/management capacity.
